How much Vitamin K is in quinoa? I have been on warfarin for 3 years and need to watch my K level very carefully.
Quinoa contains no Vitamin K and should be safe for those taking Coumadin® (warfarin).
You can find out the nutritional content of any ingredient by searching the USDA Food Composition Database. Enter the name of the ingredient, choose "Standard Reference" under "Filter on Database" and then choose "Full Report (All Nutrients)" to display the most comprehensive report for that ingredient. Vitamin K will be the last entry under "Vitamins." If it does not appear, there is not enough Vitamin K to be measured.
It's important to know that the "Branded Food Products" database, which includes foods from manufacturers like Lean Cuisine, Weight Watchers, or Hamburger Helper, do not include the Vitamin K content of their foods. The USDA does not require that information to be printed on the Nutrition Facts label of the foods, so the companies do not test for it and do not report it. You can not be certain of the amount of Vitamin K in such foods.
We have compiled a list of Vitamin K Levels in Common Foods (that is, ingredients) in both PDF and handy pocket-sized printed format for you to take with you.
