My father is on Coumadin® (almost died of a AAA). We were discussing that his levels fluctuate because of Fresca soda or maybe some Sprite or 7up he drinks. Would this have an effect on his meds? Also when you discuss cola -does root beer fall in this category?
The USDA reports that Sprite® contains no Vitamin K at all. Their database doesn't contain information on Fresca® but there is information on many other types of soda. Cola, with or without caffeine as well as with or without sugar, does not have any Vitamin K.
The same is true for cream soda, club soda, ginger ale, grape soda, Dr. Pepper®, orange soda, root beer and tonic water.
It appears that users of Coumadin® (warfarin) would be safe drinking soda. That said, soda is not a good choice for a healthy diet. Drinking a cola or root beer occasionally is fine and one should choose sugar free products. There is plenty of research now that shows how much better other beverages can be for your health. Choose water, tea, coffee, or green tea instead.
