Chai Spiced Poached Pears
Servings
4Serving size
1/2 pear with sauce
Ingredients
2 cup Water
1 ounce (2 chai tea bags)
2 Tbsp Light brown sugar
2 tsp. Ginger root, raw (2 nickel sized slices, peeled and sliced into rounds)
1 pod star anise
1/2 tsp. Ground cinnamon
2 medium Pears (peeled)
Instructions
Combine water, tea bags, sugar, ginger slices, star anise, and cinnamon in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
Using a large spoon, lower the pears into the boiling liquid. The liquid should just cover the pears; if it doesn't, add more water to just cover them. Reduce heat and simmer pears for 20 minutes or until fork tender.
Remove pears from saucepan and set aside.
Pour the liquid through a fine mesh strainer, being sure to catch the liquid in a bowl, discarding the tea bags, ginger slices, and star anise.
Return saucepan with poaching liquid to heat and boil the liquid over high heat until it is the consistency of a thin syrup about 20 minutes.
Serve 1/2 pear with 1 Tbsp syrup.

Any pear variety will work but Anjou or Bartlett are best suited to poaching. If your pear is very hard you can still poach it however it may require more than 20 minutes.
You can also try this recipe with other fruit like peaches, apples, apricots, or nectarines. The remaining liquid can be used as a sauce for ice cream and other desserts.
