Egg White & Spinach Breakfast Burrito and
Sausage, Egg & Smoked Gouda Breakfast Burrito

Dr. Gourmet reviews the Egg White & Spinach Breakfast Burrito from evol FoodsWe're returning to our tour of the frozen breakfast burrito offerings this week. So far the breakfast burrito offerings have been largely good with the notable exception of Amy's Breakfast Burrito (still bad after all of these years).

Similarly, evol Foods' burritos have been largely good - only one burrito has gotten a bad review from us (although plenty of their other foods have). So the prospect of a breakfast burrito from evol Foods had the panel feeling like today would not be one of those days that we live up to our motto of "We eat it, so you don't have to.™"

We started with the Egg White & Spinach Burrito, which is labeled as including roasted tomato, potato, and cheddar cheese. While "for best results" (according to the package) we should have thawed the burritos in the refrigerator overnight and then microwaved, as usual we chose to do what we figured most people would do: microwave from frozen. After cooking, flipping, cooking, then allowing to rest for 2 minutes, we had the usual down side of a microwaved burrito: a soggy (yet whole wheat) tortilla that necessitates using a fork and knife rather than being able to pick it up. Not very helpful if this is the sort of thing you want to be able to cook and then take with you on the way to work.

That said, it's a good burrito. As with evol's burritos, the filling-to-tortilla ratio is good, with the fillings going all the way to the end of the burrito. The spinach is diced small and the tomato even smaller, allowing the flavors to be distributed evenly through the burrito. (Indeed, the tomato flavor is light enough that those with GERD might find this acceptable. As always, use your judgment.) The egg whites are as fluffy as they could be, considering their microwaved status, and there are enough diced potatoes to have the flavor without taking over the filling. "It's like... a tiny egg white omelet with a side of potatoes in a burrito," said one taster. Even better, after a minute or two the tortilla does dry enough that the burrito can be picked up. This has 260 calories, 290 milligrams of sodium, and 4 grams of fiber - if you'd really rather have a burrito for breakfast this is a good choice.

Dr. Gourmet Reviews the Sausage, Egg & Smoked Gouda Breakfast Burrito from evol FoodsThe Sausage, Egg & Smoked Gouda burrito also got a thumbs up from the panel. There are nice chunks of egg and potato, but no visible sausage, which had our tasters frowning until we read the ingredients: they're sausage crumbles. Which actually worked out well, again distributing the flavorly nice throughout the burrito. The smoked gouda and caramelized onion adds a smokey, savory flavor to the spiciness of the jalapenos, giving the overall burrito a truly "savory, meaty" flavor. A few more calories here at 280 but the same amount of sodium and slightly less fiber (3 grams). Two winners from one of our favorite burrito companies.
